Ayurveda and Metals: What the Charaka Samhita Actually Says About Brass, Copper and Kansa

If you spend any time looking at traditional metal utensil brands in India, you will notice a pattern: every brand invokes Ayurveda. Every product description mentions the Charaka Samhita. Every copper vessel claims ancient textual authority.

What almost none of them do is tell you what the texts actually say — which chapters, which verses, what precise properties are attributed to which metals, and where the ancient claims end and the modern marketing begins.

This article is Peedhi's attempt to close that gap. We went to the source texts — the Charaka Samhita, the Ashtanga Hrdayam, the Rasaratna Samuccaya — cross-referenced with peer-reviewed academic translations and published Ayurvedic scholarship. What follows is what we found, stated as accurately as we can manage, with sources named.

One important caveat first: Ayurvedic metallurgy is a vast, complex field that took centuries to develop. The texts use Sanskrit terminology that does not translate neatly into modern medical language. We will do our best to convey the original meaning without overclaiming — which is, as it happens, exactly what the texts themselves recommend.


Background

How Ayurveda classifies metals

Before examining what the texts say about specific metals, it helps to understand how Ayurveda organises them. The classical system divides metals — referred to collectively as dhatus or lohas — into three broad categories.

Shuddha Loha (pure metals) includes gold, silver, copper and iron — the base metals recognised as having direct therapeutic properties in their natural, purified state.

Puti Loha (base or lower metals) includes lead and tin — materials with lower melting points recognised as requiring careful handling.

Mishra Loha (mixed metals or alloys) includes kansa, brass and other compound metals — recognised as having distinct properties that differ from their constituent metals alone.

Rasaratna Samuccaya, Chapter 5 — Dhatu classification

The Rasaratna Samuccaya lists eight core Dhatus: Swarna (gold), Rajata (silver), Tamra (copper), Loha (iron), Naga (lead), Vanga (tin), Pittala (bell metal) and Kamsya (bronze) — each with distinct types, purification methods, and therapeutic indications.

This classification is significant because it means Ayurveda never treated metals as interchangeable. Each metal, and each alloy, was understood to have its own distinct set of properties, contraindications and appropriate uses. The recommendation to eat from kansa is not the same as the recommendation to drink from copper — and the texts are precise about the distinction.

Copper: what the Charaka Samhita and Ashtanga Hrdayam say

Of the three metals, copper — known as Tamra in Sanskrit — receives the most detailed treatment across Ayurvedic texts. This is partly because of its widespread practical use for water storage, and partly because of its documented therapeutic properties as a processed medicine.

The properties of Tamra in classical texts

Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana 26.11–12

Copper is described as tikshna (sharp/penetrating), ushna (warming in potency) and agni-dipana (kindling of digestive fire). It is associated with metabolic stimulation — the enhancement of what Ayurveda calls digestive fire, or agni.

Ashtanga Hrdayam, Sutrasthana 5.1

The Ashtanga Hrdayam — a 7th century CE systematic compilation of Ayurvedic theory — connects the purity of water stored in appropriate vessels to mental clarity and doshic stability. It specifically recognises copper vessels for water storage as a practice that imparts health-promoting qualities.

Tamra Jal — the practice of copper water storage

The most widely known Ayurvedic copper practice is Tamra Jal — water stored overnight in a copper vessel and consumed in the morning. The Charaka Samhita, Ashtanga Hrdayam and the Bhavaprakasha all reference this practice, and the classical descriptions of its properties are specific enough to be worth citing in full.

Classical Ayurvedic properties of Tamra Jal

Water stored in copper vessels is described in classical texts as: katu (pungent) in post-digestive effect — meaning it kindles agni; kashaya (astringent) in primary taste; deepana (agni-kindling) and pachana (ama-digesting) in action; and specifically indicated for balancing kapha and pitta imbalances related to excess mucus, sluggish digestion and ama accumulation.

Bhavaprakasha, Jala-varga

States that water absorbs the guna (qualities) of the vessel it is stored in — bhajana-guna-sankramanam. This principle — that materials transfer their properties to substances stored within them — is the foundational Ayurvedic rationale for choosing storage vessels with care.

"The ancient texts do not say copper water cures disease. They say it kindles digestive fire, clears sluggish digestion and reduces ama accumulation — three things a modern physician might recognise as improved gut motility, better microbial environment and reduced inflammatory load. The language is different. The observation is the same."

The important distinction the texts make

This is where Peedhi's commitment to honest information matters: the Ayurvedic texts are careful to distinguish between Tamra Jal (water stored in copper vessels, a gentle daily practice) and Tamra Bhasma (processed copper ash used as internal medicine under physician guidance).

What the texts actually say about copper medicine vs copper water: Classical Ayurveda is explicit that raw copper has eight toxic properties (tamra doshas). Before copper is used as internal medicine, it must undergo strict purification (shodhana) and incineration (marana) processes, administered only under qualified supervision. Tamra Jal — water stored in copper — is categorically different: a gentle daily practice that delivers trace copper ions through water, which the texts describe as the "easiest and safest" way to receive copper's everyday benefits. Your morning glass of copper water is a wellness habit, not a prescription.

What modern science adds

The 2012 study published in the Journal of Health, Population and Nutrition confirmed complete elimination of Vibrio cholerae, E. coli, Salmonella Typhi and Shigella flexneri from water stored in copper vessels for 16 hours at room temperature. The researchers concluded that copper vessels represent a viable point-of-use water purification strategy — which is, in effect, exactly what Tamra Jal was in pre-industrial India, when cholera and dysentery were leading causes of death.

The mechanism — the oligodynamic effect, where copper ions dissolve in trace quantities and destroy bacterial cell membranes — was unknown to classical Ayurvedic practitioners. But its outcome was not. They simply called it purification and recommended it for precisely the conditions that waterborne pathogens cause.

Kansa: Ayurveda's most specific recommendation for eating

Of the three metals, kansa receives the most explicit Ayurvedic recommendation specifically for eating and drinking — and the classical texts give reasons that are precise enough to be remarkable.

The composition and classification

Kansa — known in Sanskrit as Kamsya or Kansya — is classified in the Ayurvedic texts as a Mishra Loha (mixed metal), an alloy of copper (Tamra) and tin (Vanga). The Rasaratna Samuccaya specifies its composition as eight parts copper to two parts tin — an 80:20 ratio that is remarkably close to the metallurgically confirmed 78:22 ratio used in genuine handcrafted kansa today.

"Astamagena tamrena dvibhaga kutilena ca vidrutena bhavet kamsyam" — Twenty percent tin bronze is obtained by melting eight parts of copper with two parts of tin. This precise specification — the oldest recorded formula for what we now call bell metal — appears in the Rasaratna Samuccaya, a 13th century CE Sanskrit treatise on Ayurvedic metallurgy.

What the texts say about eating from kansa

Rasratna Samucchaya, Chapter 5, Verse 46

"Kamsya tu tamra lohani shuddani bhavanti hi. Agnina paleya masat sarva rogan prashaman tatha."

This verse states that using utensils of pure metals — kansa, copper and iron — heated and used to prepare and serve food and drink, can have health-supporting benefits. The text specifically positions kansa as the primary metal for serving and eating.

Charaka Samhita, Siddhisthana 3.07

The Charaka Samhita specifically recommends kansa for the fabrication of therapeutic instruments, highlighting its biocompatibility and smooth surface finish. The text's confidence in kansa as a material safe for direct human contact — even for internal medical instruments — reflects how differently it was regarded from ordinary metals.

Why kansa requires no kalai coating

One of the most practically useful things the texts establish is that kansa, unlike brass, does not require an inner protective coating for food contact. The Charaka Samhita's classification of kansa as directly biocompatible is the textual basis for what we observe in practice: kansa thalis and bowls have been used for direct food service for centuries without any lining, while brass cookware requires tin-coating (kalai) to be safe for extended food contact.

Brass: what the texts say — and what they do not

Of the three metals, brass receives the most nuanced treatment in Ayurvedic texts — and this is the section where Peedhi's honest voice matters most, because brass is also the most frequently overclaimed metal in the traditional utensil market.

How Ayurveda classifies brass

Brass — known in Sanskrit as Pittala — is classified alongside kansa as a Mishra Loha (mixed metal). The Rasaratna Samuccaya lists it separately from kansa in its classification of the eight core dhatus, indicating they are treated as distinct materials with distinct properties.

The Rasaratna Samuccaya distinguishes between Pittala (bell metal, sometimes translated as brass in older texts) and Kamsya (bronze/kansa) as two separate alloys within the Mishra Loha category — each with its own types, purification methods and therapeutic indications. The detailed distinction the text draws between the two is itself evidence that ancient metallurgists understood they were working with different materials.

What the texts recommend brass for — and what they do not

Here is where honest reporting requires care. Classical Ayurvedic texts recommend brass for a range of ritual and practical uses — lamps, vessels for offering, and certain non-food-contact purposes. The texts acknowledge brass's copper content gives it purifying properties.

However — and this is important — the same texts that recommend kansa for direct food service are careful about brass in contact with food. This is the textual basis for the traditional practice of lining brass cookware with kalai (tin coating): the copper-zinc alloy of brass is recognised to behave differently from pure copper or kansa when in prolonged contact with acidic foods.

What Peedhi believes about brass: The cultural and culinary heritage of brass in India is immense and real — brass parats for kneading dough, brass serving vessels, brass water storage. The Ayurvedic texts support brass's antimicrobial properties through its copper content. For cooking, the traditional kalai lining is not a modern invention — it is the correct traditional use. For non-cooking uses like a paraat, serving vessels or decorative pieces, kalai is unnecessary. We will not overclaim what the texts do not say.

What this means for how we talk about our metals

Peedhi does not sell Ayurvedic medicine. We sell handcrafted brass, copper and kansa utensils from Jagadhri, Haryana, made exactly as they have been made for generations. The Ayurvedic texts are relevant to us not as marketing material, but as the oldest available evidence of why these metals were chosen and used across thousands of years of Indian daily life.

That evidence, when read honestly, is genuinely impressive. The Charaka Samhita's description of copper as agni-kindling and ama-digesting aligns, with striking precision, with a 2012 peer-reviewed study on waterborne pathogen elimination. The Rasaratna Samuccaya's specification of an 80:20 copper-to-tin ratio for kansa is within 2% of the metallurgically confirmed optimal ratio. The classification of kansa as directly food-safe and biocompatible is borne out by the fact that it requires no protective coating for food service.

These are not coincidences. They are the outcome of what the Charaka Samhita itself describes as its method: careful, systematic observation over time, recorded in a form that could be transmitted and refined across generations.

That is what traditional knowledge actually is — not superstition, not marketing, and not myth. It is the accumulated result of a civilisation paying close attention to what worked. Our job is to carry it forward accurately — and to be honest when a claim goes further than what the texts actually support.
